ST. MICHAEL'S IN THE MOMENT : May 28, 2017

Happy Ascension Day! In the words of the ancient hymn that we will sing on Sunday:

“Day when the Christ ascends, high in the heavens to reign.”

The Ascension brings the love of God full-circle. The human Jesus, who came from the presence of God, returns to reign.

In his incarnation, death, resurrection and ascension,
the generous self-giving love of Jesus
has been vindicated and exalted as the supreme principle of the universe.
Jesus himself
—no abstract principle but a human person—
is now exalted as the still loving, still giving, still generous Lord.
As the power of that love replaces the love of power,
so in a measure, anticipating the last great day,
God’s kingdom comes, and God’s will is done, on earth as it is in heaven.

—edited excerpt about the Ascension by N.T. Wright

In these 10 days from Ascension to Pentecost Presiding Bishop Michael Curry has invited us to join with the Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby and the whole Anglican Communion in praying for God’s kingdom to come.

Welcome to St. Michael the Archangel Episcopal Church!

We are glad you are visiting our website and hope you will visit us in person soon. If you are looking for a spiritual home, we welcome you to worship God and grow in grace with us. If you are looking for a temporary place of spiritual rest and fulfillment as you travel on to another destination, you are welcome to spend a day or a month or more with us.

St. Michael the Archangel Church is part of the Diocese of Los Angeles of The Episcopal Church. Our worship services use the 1979 Book of Common Prayer. Our early service at 8am is a quiet service using Rite I. The family service at 10am is a choral Eucharist using Rite II. The child care is always available at this service and we offer Sunday school beginning at 10am in Yeaton Hall on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Sundays of the month during the school year.

MISSION STATEMENT

Growing in God's Love.

Working in God's Spirit.

St. Michael the Archangel Episcopal Church is located in El Segundo, California, a coastal community in Los Angeles’ South Bay.  The city was founded in 1911 by Standard Oil Company and its name, which means “the second” in Spanish, is the site of Standard Oil’s second refinery. The east side of town is a bustling business mecca, home to twelve Fortune 500 companies. The west side features a quiet residential area and a quaint downtown. St. Michael’s is located on the corner of Richmond and Holly just west of the main downtown business district in the residential part of town.

Because of its centrality to the surrounding areas of Manhattan Beach, Playa Del Rey, and Hawthorne, St. Michael’s serves parishioners from across the South Bay, and routinely welcomes travelers passing through nearby LAX.
